Europe is facing a variety of challenges, including the consequences of climate change, such as flooding and heatwaves, as well as the effects of violent conflicts. The region is also grappling with inadequate protection for refugees, as evidenced by the situation in the Mediterranean, and social inequalities.

AWO International provides humanitarian aid in crisis situations, such as the flooding in Germany in 2021, sea rescue operations in the Mediterranean, and the consequences of the war of aggression in Ukraine. In addition, we are actively involved in European networks such as SOLIDAR and advocate politically for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Humanitarian aid in Ukraine

The ongoing Russian war in Ukraine has already forced millions of people to flee their homes, including many children and young people. According to the United Nations, around 18 million people in Ukraine are in need of humanitarian aid. Since February 2022, AWO International has been working with local partner organisations to provide emergency relief and reconstruction.

Global (Un)Learning – Shaping Change Together

With this project, we aim to contribute nationwide to raising awareness of global interconnections and sustainable development, and to inspire action toward a more sustainable society. By using playful interactive activities and innovative learning methods, we make complex discussions around global justice accessible and engaging for diverse target groups.

For more humanity at sea and on land

As a last resort, millions of people are forced to flee their homes to escape war and persecution in search of a better life. Most flee to neighbouring countries. The smallest proportion make their way to Europe. The journey across the Mediterranean is considered one of the deadliest. Together with our partner organisation SOS Humanity, AWO International is involved in sea rescues.

Flood relief in Germany

The flood disaster in July last year left a trail of devastation: more than 180 people lost their lives and thousands lost their homes. Together with the AWO Head association and the AWO regional associations Rheinland, Mittelrhein, Niederrhein and Westliches Westfalen, AWO International was active in the acute phase and supports the people even after the flood.
