AWO International is also active in Europe: In addition to humanitarian aid, we are involved in European networks such as Solidar and political lobbying for the implementation of Agenda-2030 for sustainable development.
In crisis situations such as the floods in Germany, the severe floods in the Balkans or the catastrophic situation of refugees in the Mediterranean, we and our partners provide humanitarian aid.

Humanitarian aid in Ukraine
The ongoing Russian war in Ukraine has already forced millions of people to flee their homes, including many children and young people. According to the United Nations, around 18 million people in Ukraine are in need of humanitarian aid. Since February 2022, AWO International has been working with local partner organisations to provide emergency relief and reconstruction.
As a last resort, millions of people are forced to flee their homes to escape war and persecution in search of a better life. Most flee to neighbouring countries. The smallest proportion make their way to Europe. The journey across the Mediterranean is considered one of the deadliest. Together with our partner organisation SOS Humanity, AWO International is involved in sea rescues.
Social-ecological transformation in the welfare sector
The project aims to raise awareness for sustainability by making the connections between global justice and the need for a socio-ecological transformation understandable. Moreover it aims to develope options for action together with the target groups.
The flood disaster in July last year left a trail of devastation: more than 180 people lost their lives and thousands lost their homes. Together with the AWO Head association and the AWO regional associations Rheinland, Mittelrhein, Niederrhein and Westliches Westfalen, AWO International was active in the acute phase and supports the people even after the flood.
ENGAGE: Empowering Next Generation Advocates for Global Education
The ENGAGE project empowers youth workers and young people through training, inclusive methods and resources on democratic participation, European values and social justice. This promotes an engaged, inclusive and active youth for a more just future.
Our development educational program takes the challenges and opportunities of globalization into perspective and provides impulses for value-oriented, sustainable action, particularly in the welfare workers' welfare association and the AWO youth organizations.
Increase awareness of the 17 goals for sustainable development
The goal of the project is to make the global goals for sustainable development (SDG) of the Agenda 2030 known within our organization and in its extended social, political and economic environment.
