Mediterranean

The Mediterranean has become one of the main escape routes to Europe. It is also one of the most dangerous and deadly, with tens of thousands of people drowning while fleeing in recent years. As European countries are not taking sufficient responsibility, and government coordination of sea rescue operations is lacking, civil society organisations are taking on this task to save lives.

Humanitarian aid is needed where people find themselves in need through no fault of their own and are unable to help themselves. Those who embark on the dangerous crossing of the Mediterranean are fleeing humanitarian crises and risking their lives because they see no other option. As a humanitarian organisation, we have a duty to provide unconditional assistance to those in need, regardless of their origin or the reasons they have fled. This is why we have supported SOS Humanity's civilian sea rescue operations since 2015.

For more humanity at sea and on land

As a last resort, millions of people are forced to flee their homes to escape war and persecution in search of a better life. Most flee to neighbouring countries. The smallest proportion make their way to Europe. The journey across the Mediterranean is considered one of the deadliest. Together with our partner organisation SOS Humanity, AWO International is involved in sea rescues.
