Flood relief and support for Afghan refugees in Pakistan

Many people from Afghanistan seek refuge in Pakistan. The devastating floods in Pakistan in 2022 have further exacerbated the situation. The negative effects of the disaster are still visible. Together with SOLIDAR Suisse, AWO International is supporting those affected by the floods and Afghan refugees with urgently needed relief supplies.

Many refugees live under poor conditions in overcrowded accommodation. Together with SOLIDAR Suisse and SPADO, we support children and families.

Since the withdrawal of NATO and the USA in August 2021 and the takeover by the Taliban, many people have had to leave Afghanistan. According to the UNHCR, more than 5.8 million Afghans are currently living in neighboring countries (as of July 2024). The living conditions for refugees are precarious: they often have no access to humanitarian aid, food or the labor market. There are also higher crime rates and violence, especially against women. The rapid increase in refugees leads to a lack of necessary goods and increased tensions in the communities.

Together with our partner organization SOLIDAR Suisse, we are supporting a project run by the local NGO Sustainable Peace and Development Organization (SPADO). We provide those affected in Pakistan with emergency accommodation, food, hygiene articles and kitchen utensils. The target group are Afghan refugees who have had to leave the country since the Taliban took power. Due to high inflation, food prices have risen sharply and many refugees can no longer afford them. Food packages are therefore essential and cover the basic needs of the Afghan refugees, which leads to an improved atmosphere in the shelters.

There was no real warning and the water came so fast that there was no time to save any of our belongings. We had to save our lives.

Flood disaster in Pakistan

Weeks of heavy rainfall led to catastrophic flooding in South Asia in August and September 2022. Millions of people in Pakistan were affected, over 1.700 people lost their lives and 13.000 were injured. According to the authorities, over 33 million people were affected and several provinces were under water. Through our joint emergency aid project with SOLIDAR Suisse and the local NGO SPADO, 7.000 people whose homes were destroyed and whose livestock drowned are receiving the basic necessities to ensure their survival.

Pakistan

Approximately 242 million people are living in Pakistan. Many of them do not have easy access to drinking water and suffer from food insecurity due to natural disasters, lack of livelihood opportunities and high food prices. Already during the Afghanistan war 40 years ago, Pakistan - despite its own economic problems - took in millions of refugees from the neighbouring country. Since the Taliban took power in August 2021, many Afghans have again sought protection in Pakistan.

Forgotten crises: Supporting the Rohingya and host communities in Bangladesh

In August 2017, an outbreak of massive violence in Myanmar's Rakhine state forced the Rohingya, a stateless minority, to flee to neighbouring Bangladesh. More than a million Rohingya refugees still live in camps near Cox's Bazar. The effects of climate change are making conditions on the ground even more difficult - this is where our project with local partner GUK comes in.
