Many people in Bangladesh leave their homes in search of work, often lacking sufficient information about safe migration routes, their rights, and available protection services. In the Gaibandha region, migrant families, returnees, and people displaced by climate change face economic insecurity and social exclusion. Human trafficking remains a serious threat. Together with GUK, we aim to address these issues.
How we proceed
Local protection structures against human trafficking and counseling services for migrants offer low-threshold access to information and advice—for potential migrants as well as returnees. Community-based self-help groups and youth organizations strengthen social cohesion and promote economic self-reliance. Vocational training, microenterprises, and agricultural support measures create concrete income opportunities. Through media outreach, political dialogue, and national networks, we ensure that the issue of safe migration remains on the agenda at all levels.

Using vocational skills to earn a living: The project provides hands-on vocational training to support migrants and their families.
Safe migration and economic stability impact the entire family, including the next generation.
Climate-resilient agriculture as a source of income: The project helps families in Gaibandha establish sustainable agricultural activities.

Securing Food, Preventing Disasters
In the Gaibandha district of northern Bangladesh, floods, heatwaves and riverbank erosion pose a constant threat to the livelihoods of many people year after year. Crops are destroyed, homes are damaged and roads become impassable. The consequences are hunger and poverty. Limited socio-economic opportunities in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) drive thousands to seek work abroad for better prospects. However, many go undocumented and unaware of their rights, ending up abused and exploited. AWO International and PPK aim to ensure migrants are properly protected and have alternative livelihood options upon their return home.
