Securing Food, Preventing Disasters

Supporting Communities in Northern Bangladesh

In the Gaibandha district of northern Bangladesh, floods, heatwaves and riverbank erosion pose a constant threat to the livelihoods of many people year after year. Crops are destroyed, homes are damaged and roads become impassable. The consequences are hunger and poverty. That is why, together with our local partner organisation, Gana Unnayan Kendra (GUK), we are specifically strengthening disaster preparedness and food security on the ground.

Climate Crisis Threatens the Livelihoods of Many Families

Almost every second person in Gaibandha lives in poverty. One in three children under the age of five is malnourished. The region is particularly vulnerable to natural disasters: floods and extreme weather events threaten harvests, destroy sources of income, and regularly force families into emergency shelters. The climate crisis is increasing the frequency and intensity of these weather events.

Strengthening Communities – Facing Disasters Together

Together with GUK, we are strengthening the resilience of local communities. Early warning systems are being installed, people are educated about risks, and trained to respond in emergencies. Community members actively participate in disaster management committees and self-help groups to protect their villages.

Improving Infrastructure, Protecting Lives

In addition to awareness-raising efforts, concrete protective measures are being implemented: we are building emergency shelters, wells for clean drinking water, and latrines and sanitation facilities. These are constructed at higher elevations to ensure functionality even during floods. All of this significantly improves living conditions in the villages.

This project is unique because it combines climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction, two areas which are often treated separately. Our approach is holistic: we promote food security, improve access to clean water and basic sanitation, and create alternative sources of income. At the same time, we are reducing emissions through ecologically sustainable measures. It is particularly motivating to see how committed people are to the project goals after just a few months. I am proud to be part of an initiative that is bringing about long-term change.

Strengthening Agriculture – Creating Sustainable Sources of Income

A key component of the project is supporting families in agriculture. We promote the cultivation of climate-resilient crops – varieties that can thrive even under extreme conditions such as drought or flooding. These robust types, including specific kinds of rice and vegetables, help ensure stable harvests despite unpredictable weather and thus contribute to the food security of families.

In addition, selected families receive goats. These animals are a reliable source of milk and meat and also allow for small-scale breeding. With just two goats, families can establish a sustainable source of income. The goats reproduce regularly, and the offspring can be sold. This helps families build long-term independence and become more resilient to the impacts of natural disasters.

Forgotten crises: Supporting the Rohingya and host communities in Bangladesh

In August 2017, an outbreak of massive violence in Myanmar's Rakhine state forced the Rohingya, a stateless minority, to flee to neighbouring Bangladesh. More than a million Rohingya refugees still live in camps near Cox's Bazar. The effects of climate change are making conditions on the ground even more difficult - this is where our project with local partner GUK comes in.

Good harvests instead of climate crisis

Northern Bangladesh is one of the poorest regions in the country. The climate crisis is an additional threat to people's livelihoods. As a result, more and more families are leaving their home villages. This is where our project with our partner organisation Gana Unnayan Kendra comes in. Together, we are creating future prospects for families living on river islands.
