Disaster Response and Building Future Resilience in Pakistan

In August 2022, massive floods in Pakistan submerged more than two-thirds of the country. Together with Solidar Suisse and the two Pakistani non-governmental organizations SCF and SAFWCO, we are supporting people in the hardest-hit regions to rebuild their livelihoods and strengthen their resilience to future natural disasters.

Learning together: Awareness-raising for greater safety in the event of a disaster.

Flooding caused by unusually heavy rainfall has further worsened the already precarious living conditions of many people in Pakistan. The province of Sindh was particularly affected, with nearly five times more rainfall than the average of the past 30 years. The project area of Sanghar, one of the largest districts in Sindh, was especially hard hit by the disaster.

A large part of Sanghar’s population depends on agriculture and has suffered massive losses of livestock and crops, as well as damage to farmland. Women are particularly affected by the consequences of the natural disaster, as most of them work in agriculture. Even before the floods, the region of Sanghar was marked by poverty, gender inequality, and limited access to basic services. The floods have further exacerbated the situation for local communities.

Support for disaster recovery

The project helps to restore the livelihoods of affected people and to better prepare communities for future natural disasters. Awareness-raising activities are conducted in communities and schools, and specialized departments are being established. These measures ensure that people on the ground have the necessary structures and knowledge to prevent disasters and strengthen their resilience. In addition, equipment is being provided and early warning systems introduced to protect people in the event of a disaster.

Many people lack the means to rebuild their destroyed homes or restore their livelihoods. This is why we provide direct financial support to enable affected families to restart their work – for example in livestock and poultry farming or vegetable cultivation – and thereby sustainably improve their living conditions.
