On 24 June 2026, two major earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale struck Venezuela. The state of La Guaira was among the areas hit hardest: Over 100 residential buildings collapsed, leaving more than 70,000 families directly affected. Search and rescue operations are ongoing in the municipalities of Catia La Mar, Caraballeda, Macuto, Los Corales and Playa Grande. Fifteen emergency shelters have been set up where people are living in cramped conditions.
The healthcare system has largely collapsed: hospitals are overwhelmed, and emergency medical care is sometimes provided outdoors. The water supply situation is particularly critical — water distribution networks have been destroyed and people are reliant on unsafe water sources. This has led to an increase in cases of diarrhoea and gastrointestinal infections, which are particularly dangerous for children under five. The World Health Organization and the International Organization for Migration have identified the WASH sector as the most urgent humanitarian priority.
In response to this acute emergency, we are working with our local partner organization, FUDEP, to distribute hygiene kits to 550 directly affected people in the emergency shelters in La Guaira. The kits help prevent the spread of infectious diseases, ensure menstrual hygiene, and preserve people’s basic dignity in an extreme emergency situation.

The border city of Tapachula is one of the first stops for migrants on their way to Mexico or the United States. The migrants suffer from human rights violations and precarious living conditions. Our partner organisation "Centro de Derechos Humanos Fray Matías de Córdova" works to ensure access to rights and services for migrants, with a particular focus on women and girls.
