Strong communities instead of dangerous paths: opportunities for families in Nepal

In Makwanpur, one of the poorest regions of Nepal, we are working with the local partner organization Women Skill Creation Centre (WoSCC) to empower people. We provide information about safe migration and create new income opportunities - through training, education and practical help for micro-enterprises. This enables families to stay in the area and shape their own future.

In the Makwanpur district in central Nepal, we are campaigning for women - together with our partner organisation Women Skill Creation Centre (WoSCC)

The Makwanpur region is one of the poorest in the country. Many families struggle with poverty, social marginalisation and a lack of income opportunities. Because the capital Kathmandu is easily accessible, many people hope for a better future abroad - and often take dangerous routes to get there.

Informing People about Safe Migration

To ensure that migration does not end in exploitation or human trafficking, we provide targeted information about safe migration routes. Every week, women, men and young people who are thinking about leaving the country or have already had bad experiences meet in 19 Community Discussion Centres. They exchange ideas, receive legal information and learn what to look out for when seeking employment. The aim is to ensure that migration takes place safely, voluntarily and through state-recognised agencies. Many participants actively pass on their knowledge and organise information events in their villages.

We are seeing positive changes in the communities. We are very motivated by the fact that the project gives women in particular economic independence and self-confidence. They are setting up their own businesses in their villages and are now earning a stable income.

Strengthening Local Incomes - Creating Local Prospects

We support people in building a future locally and show them alternatives to migration to the city or abroad.

  • Training: In agricultural training courses, participants learn how to cultivate their fields more profitably and market their products.
  • Start-up aid for small entrepreneurs: We help people to set up small businesses such as a sewing service or village shop by providing equipment and support to set up their own businesses.

In 2024, 100 people in the municipality of Raksirang took part in agricultural training. For example, they learnt how to grow, store and sell their vegetables efficiently. We built two new irrigation systems so that their fields can also be irrigated in the dry season, which 51 households use.

Through training, education and targeted support, we encourage people to become active themselves, realise their own ideas and build a better future for themselves locally.

Activities
  • Building and strengthening community structures: We create places where people can meet, exchange ideas and find solutions together. These meetings help to raise awareness of safe migration and strengthen the local community.
  • Networking with key partners: We organise meetings with local, regional and national decision-makers to promote the issue of safe migration throughout the region and to gain key supporters.
  • Educational events and media work: We organise events and local campaigns, e.g. in the form of radio programmes, to inform and educate people about safe migration routes.
  • Support in improving the water supply: We help agricultural businesses to improve their water supply so that they can irrigate their fields all year round, enabling them to farm better.
  • Training for income opportunities: We provide training to help people earn money in agriculture or through small businesses. We also support them in developing their own business plans to successfully realise their plans
