When agriculture is not enough: migration as a way out of hardship
Our project focuses on the community of Bansbaari, which is located south of Kathmandu. Most of its inhabitants are small-scale farmers whose livelihoods depend on agriculture. Although roads make markets in Pharping and Kathmandu accessible, many families lack access to larger sales markets and opportunities to successfully market their products.
Due to financial hardship, more and more people are deciding to migrate abroad. However, the reality is often sobering: many end up in precarious employment and struggle to get back on their feet in Nepal upon their return.
Our project provides women with the opportunity to establish a strong and secure position within their society and the local labour market. Many women face significant risks when they go abroad, ranging from discrimination and low wages to debt. We show them alternative paths and empower them to create stable livelihoods in their home countries. Seeing how women confidently shape their futures and develop their independence motivates us.

Empowering women – shaping the future locally
This is where our project with our Nepalese partner organisation, Pourakhi, comes in. The project aims to create local alternative sources of income and curb unsafe migration. One focus is on providing vocational training to disadvantaged women, including single women and those from lower social classes. They learn how to generate income in new ways, both within and outside agriculture.
The project also supports participants in developing business plans and provides the necessary start-up equipment. Information sessions held within communities raise awareness of the risks of migration and highlight safer alternatives. By networking with local stakeholders and interest groups, women can access better opportunities for economic participation and build a future in Nepal.
