Emergency relief following the earthquake in Nepal

Shaping the future together in the Jajarkot district

On 3 November 2023, an earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale struck several towns in the Jajarkot district in western Nepal. This is one of the poorest and most remote regions in the country, where many residents were already affected by food insecurity prior to the disaster. Together with its local partner organisation BEE-Group, AWO International was quickly on the ground to identify the most urgent needs and provide immediate emergency aid.

Emergency Aid: Rapid support for families in need

Immediately after the earthquake, our focus was on providing aid to the communities that were hit hardest. Many families lost their food supplies, livestock and seeds. Thanks to your donations, we were able to collaborate with the BEE Group to provide, among other things:

  • provide 500 families with food parcels
  • provide 300 families with blankets and mattresses.
  • set up emergency shelters for those worst affected.

These measures saved lives and laid the foundation for sustainable recovery.

Reconstruction and future prospects: aid that lasts

In the second phase, the project showed people prospects for a secure future. Over a period of three months, we worked with the BEE Group to help people recover from the aftermath of the earthquake and get back on their feet in the long term:

  • Training for 100 farmers in sustainable agricultural practices and seed distribution
  • Support for 120 households in goat breeding and 80 families in beekeeping
  • Repair and reconstruction of 22 drinking water points and 6 irrigation systems – especially for single women and families without homes

In this way, we are working together to create new prospects and strengthen the resilience of the communities.

Prevention: earthquake-proof houses for greater safety

In order to be better prepared for future disasters, we teamed up with the BEE Group to train 40 bricklayers in the construction of earthquake-proof houses and buildings. In intensive training courses, they received practical instruction and were equipped with the necessary tools.

Your donation counts! With your support, AWO International, together with the BEE Group, can continue to provide rapid emergency aid, implement sustainable projects and give new hope to the people of Nepal. Help with your donation or as a member!

New perspectives for the residents in the red light district of Kolkata

Bowbazaar is one of the oldest and largest red-light districts in the metropolis of Kolkata in West Bengal, India. We work here with our partner organisation, South Kolkata Hamari Muskan (SKHM). Our project aims to reduce gender-based violence, offering women the opportunity to seek refuge in a safe space where their privacy is respected. We also provide healthcare and educational services, as well as showing residents alternative employment opportunities.

Good harvests instead of climate crisis

Northern Bangladesh is one of the poorest regions in the country. The climate crisis is an additional threat to people's livelihoods. As a result, more and more families are leaving their home villages. This is where our project with our partner organisation Gana Unnayan Kendra comes in. Together, we are creating future prospects for families living on river islands.

Forgotten crises: Supporting the Rohingya and host communities in Bangladesh

In August 2017, an outbreak of massive violence in Myanmar's Rakhine state forced the Rohingya, a stateless minority, to flee to neighbouring Bangladesh. More than a million Rohingya refugees still live in camps near Cox's Bazar. The effects of climate change are making conditions on the ground even more difficult - this is where our project with local partner GUK comes in.
