Disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation in western Nepal

In western Nepal, floods, landslides, droughts, and other impacts of the climate crisis are destroying livelihoods every year, particularly threatening the existence of families in rural areas. AWO International and the Nepalese non-governmental organization BEE-Group are therefore working to strengthen local disaster preparedness.

According to the Global Climate Risk Index, Nepal is one of the countries most severely affected by climate crisis worldwide. In the rural community of Raptisonari in the Banke district, people are experiencing flooding, water shortages and crop failures. In collaboration with the Bheri Environmental Excellence Group (BEE Group), AWO International is enhancing disaster preparedness and climate change adaptation measures. 20 disaster management committees are formulating action plans, educating communities and establishing early warning systems. Additionally, task forces are being trained in evacuation procedures, first aid and WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene).

As an agricultural technician, I train women's groups in goat breeding, seasonal vegetable cultivation and plant protection. We want to strengthen their livelihoods so that they can become more independent from their husbands and better support their families - especially their children's education.

Creation of Risk Maps and Evacuation Routes

In collaboration with local committees, community mapping is carried out to identify hazards and mark potential risks, evacuation routes, and safe shelters in case of floods. In addition, we support structural protection measures such as embankments, dams, and evacuation paths. Public awareness campaigns through theater, radio, and social media further help to inform and prepare communities.

Empowerment and New Income Opportunities

Furthermore, women’s empowerment centers are being established to foster exchange and promote economic independence for women. Training courses in organic vegetable growing, improved livestock farming, and skilled trades can open up new opportunities. Participants also receive initial support in the form of seeds, animals for goat or pig farming, or small-scale irrigation systems to help them get started.

Philippine farmers switch to green production

Together with the local partner organisation ECOWEB, AWO International supports smallholder households and strengthens the local capacities of the agricultural industry in Sibagat. Filipino farmers are introduced to the use of natural materials and practices that are climate-friendly and sustainable in order to protect the environment, improve their livelihoods and reduce poverty. In this way, local capacities can be strengthened and the impacts of extreme weather events and climate change can be better managed.
