PROMOTING HEALTH - EMPOWERING INDIGENOUS WOMEN

MIDWIFE PROJECT IN NORTHERN GUATEMALA

Climate-related disasters and declining agricultural yields are threatening the nutrition and health of mothers and children in northern Guatemala. Together with our partner organisation ASESCA, we are working to improve health care for pregnant women and young children in the rural regions of Alta and Baja Verapaz.

Residents of the departments of Alta Verapaz and Baja Verapaz have limited access to public health services. Pregnant women, mothers and young children in particular suffer from inadequate health care. In addition, climate change and associated droughts have negatively affected agricultural yields in the region, leading to high levels of food insecurity. To address these challenges, AWO International is working with the Guatemalan NGO ASECSA, an association of community health services made up of midwives' associations and health cooperatives.

We suffer from inadequate care in health facilities and violence against women. It’s good that we now have access to information, because we women have rights! The ASECSA and AWO International project is a huge support, because not everyone has access to public health care and a balanced diet.

Medical care by indigenous midwives

Our local partner organisation ASECSA trains midwives who come directly from the villages. This significantly reduces infant and maternal mortality. Women are also being helped to improve their food supply through climate-smart farming methods. This approach is particularly targeted at indigenous women from the Q'eqchi' and Achi' communities. In addition to health care, strengthening the economic independence of women is also important to us. Savings groups and workshops help women to improve their financial skills and provide for their families. This improves health, increases family income and promotes social cohesion and self-reliance in the communities.

Disaster Risk Reduction for All

People with disabilities often have less access to education and social participation. Discrimination and exclusion make their daily lives even more difficult. During natural disasters in Central America, this can be life-threatening. In Guatemala and El Salvador, AWO International is committed to inclusive disaster preparedness and comprehensive support for people with disabilities in their daily lives.

Solidary families and opportunities for further education

Many migrants from South and Central America pass through Honduras and Guatemala on their way to Mexico or the US. These people often experience human rights abuses, exploitation and violence. We work with local partners to defend the rights of migrants in Guatemala and Honduras.

Silence is not an option

The human rights situation in El Salvador is becoming increasingly serious as a result of the government's crackdown on gang crime in the country. Human rights violations are commonplace. Our partner organisation Cristosal is committed to supporting women and their families who have become victims of human rights violations and displacement.
