The rural region of Otuke in northern Uganda is severely affected by malnutrition. Food insecurity, limited access to safe drinking water and poor hygiene further complicate living conditions. Extreme weather events caused by the climate crisis, such as droughts and floods, also lead to crop failures, famine and diseases such as malaria and diarrhoea.
Women and other disadvantaged groups often lack access to resources because gender norms usually reserve land ownership for men. Additionally, the consequences of past armed conflicts continue to affect people, with women in particular suffering from severe trauma. Many survivors still suffer from severe mental and physical health problems, stigma, discrimination and poverty.
As a woman in Uganda, I have experienced a lot of gender-based violence and inequality. Education and entrepreneurship are crucial to women's empowerment. Since the beginning of the project, I have not only gained new knowledge and skills, but I have also seen how the training is bringing about positive changes in the community.
Elizabeth, Project Officer at FAPAD
Our project strengthens vulnerable families in the areas of food security, income security and resilience to climate-related disasters. We support the development of sustainable agricultural businesses through targeted training, imparting knowledge on climate-adapted agriculture, gender equality, collective marketing, and savings and credit methods. By adopting improved agricultural practices and increasing yields, families can enhance their nutritional status and generate additional income. Moreover, village savings and credit groups provide families with financial security and support.
Together with the families, the women develop plans and visions for the future to promote sustainable agriculture and disaster risk reduction - an important step towards greater empowerment and resilience.
